CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS CDRN (Canadian Design Research Network) Interactive and Sensing Technologies Workshop at the Mobile Nation Summit

Mobile Nation Summit and the Canadian Design Research Network will co-host a two-day workshop as a part of the Mobile Nation Summit conference program from March 23-25 2007 in Toronto, Canada. Accepted papers present during a plenary session and will be published in the conference proceedings. In addition full-day workshops will be held to explore new mobile and sensing technologies authoring environments.
We invite you to share your investigations, installations, new technologies, and designs with us in two-four page case-story reports that explores themes related to the following: Pervasive and ubiquitous computing, Locative experiences, Participatory culture, Social computing, Interactive art, speculative design, distributed creativity, hacking, circuit bending, urban narratives, mapping, open sourcing, performance art, and experimental visualization. Accepted case-stories will be presented as a plenary track in the Mobile Nation Summit and proceedings.

We also invite you to participate in a series of hands-on workshops in which you will collaboratively work with, share, and learn about new interactive and sensing technology platforms specifically developed for mobile devices led by the originators of the technology platforms and environments.
The full-day collaborative workshops will be conducted with focused on three types of authoring environments for new and experienced producers, developers, researchers, and artists: • Future of media production: New authoring tools for content across broadband, interactive, and mobile environments. This theme will explore how authors can develop personalized and multi-channel content that explores new genres and engagement in narratives and games.
• Physical computing and Augmented systems: New authoring technologies have radically narrowed the gap between the device and the user. For example, Java mobile, Processing, Flash and MaxMSP have been fully integrated into mobile communications systems. Mobile systems have transformed from opaque proprietary hardware, to open ended and fully scriptable authoring environments. This theme will explore the possibilities of using microcontroller based electro mechanical systems as participants in the urban landscape. Themes such as movement, embedded sensors, dynamic formal interventions will be developed.
The CDRN Interactive and Sensing Technologies Workshop is held in conjunction with the Mobile Nation Summit: Mobile Nation: Creating Methodologies for Mobile Platforms is an international research conference that will engage social science and humanities researchers in the analysis, development and critique of mobile experiences, related technologies and the context of use. Through public presentations, publications and workshops, Mobile Nation will extend the reach of current interdisciplinary research to a larger cohort of scholars and researchers. Mobile content, delivered across a range of mobile platforms, is a key signpost of current and emerging directions in communications scholarship. The Canadian Design Research Network is a new consortium of academics and partners from the private, public, and non-governmental working together to improve design outcomes in Canadian society through research in design.
